A chat with your neighbor on the nearest wooden bench, a shady spot under the trees, and a freshly tapped drink – ideally in the local beer garden. The concept dates back to the late 18th century, when Munich brewers served their beer in the summer directly from their lager cellars on the Isar. They set up benches and tables in the shade of chestnut trees and offered food.

The combination of green space, shade and hearty beer is not only very popular throughout Germany. Beer gardens have also been a hit overseas for several years. If you’re longing for a cool beer on your next long-distance trip, you’ll find what you’re looking for here: We’re introducing five German beer gardens around the globe where you wouldn’t expect them.

Estabrook Beer Garden, Milwaukee (USA)

The German immigrants brought not only their art of brewing, but also the beer garden culture to the United States. Today you can find German beer gardens everywhere in the USA, even the Hofbräuhaus has seven branches, most of which also have a terrace. But there are hardly any authentic beer gardens in public parks – after all, in most US states it is illegal to drink alcohol in public.

An exception is the “Estabrook Beer Garden” in the state of Wisconsin, which advertises itself as the first public beer garden in the USA since Prohibition (1920–1933). Idyllically located on the banks of the Milwaukee River, the beer garden skilfully conveys Bavarian tradition without too many clichés. Hofbräu beer is drunk from real Isar silk; And if you want, you can bring your own food.

By the way: Wisconsin is the US state with the most descendants of German immigrants – in a 2020 survey by the US Census Bureau, 38 percent of residents said they were of German descent.

Breakfast World and German Beer Garden, Chiang Mai (Thailand)

There are also German immigrants in Thailand. One of them is Olaf Kujawa, who, together with his wife Fong, expanded his breakfast restaurant “Chiang Mai Breakfast World” in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, in 2015 to include a spacious German beer garden. There are small palm trees scattered throughout the area, with Thai fabric garlands strung between them. For morning pint fans The beer garden is particularly suitable for night owls (looking for a counter beer) – it opens at seven in the morning every day except Mondays.

Hearty dishes such as pork knuckle, trout and schnitzel are served on the table; all with a bit of culinary sophistication, but not pretentious. The restaurant also offers international cuisine. Bitburger, Erdinger Weissbier and Erdinger Dunkel are available on tap – plus the matching parasols for German flair.

SKW brewery and beer garden, Windhoek (Namibia)

Around 20,000 native German speakers live in Namibia today – less than one percent of the total population of the southwest African state. They are descendants of the German colonists who remained in Namibia after the collapse of the German Empire and the end of the oppressive rule. Relics of the colonial past are scattered throughout the country: many German buildings, signs and street names have survived.

A more recent Bavarian-style beer garden, the “SKW Brauhaus”, can be found in the capital Windhoek. The restaurant and terrace are attached to a German sports club that occupies a large area in the south of the city. Bratwurst, pork knuckle and Schlachtplatte are accompanied by Namibian beers such as Hansa Draught on tap. A large-scale Oktoberfest also takes place every year on the grounds of the Sport Klub Windhoek.

German Club, Cairns (Australia)

German beer gardens have even made it to the other side of the world – as early as 1971, when German expats founded the German Club (formerly Germania Club) in Cairns, northeast Australia. There is a full load of Bavaria, including a brass band, blue and white bunting and waitresses in traditional costumes. There has to be a little bit of kitsch.

The beer garden is spanned by a high pavilion roof and is located directly in front of the clubhouse, which was previously an empty church. Rolled roast, roulades and cheese spaetzle end up on the plate; The beer selection includes almost 30 German imported beers, DAB is on tap.

The German Club offers skat sessions, dance groups and free German lessons. The restaurant also hosts bachelor parties, hen parties and weddings (yes, including kidnapping the bride) as well as – of course – an annual Oktoberfest.

German Court, Erbil (Kurdistan/Iraq)

The restaurateur Gunter Völkers, who comes from Thuringia, founded the “Deutscher Hof” in Erbil, northern Iraq, in 2005 as a meeting place for expats. The city is located in the autonomous Kurdish part of the country; The Baghdad government’s strict ban on alcohol is not implemented here.

Two years earlier, Völkers had already opened a “Deutscher Hof” in Kabul, Afghanistan, but it had to close in 2008 due to the security situation. He now lives in Sri Lanka and sells homemade ham and sausages – but the beer garden in Erbil still exists. Even when the Islamic State was only 25 kilometers from Erbil in 2014, the restaurant remained open.

Today the “Deutsche Hof” in Erbil is a local institution; Regular live music and football broadcasts give it a modern touch. The kitchen offers traditional German cuisine such as sauerbraten and stuffed cabbage, as well as Eichbaum brand beer on tap. There is even a small Christmas market in December.
