The young French made short work of the New Zealanders this Thursday (34-20) during the group stages of the U20 World Cup.

The young French were amazing against their New Zealand counterparts, this Thursday in South Africa during the group stage of the Under-20 World Cup. Les Bleuets won 35 to 14, validating their qualification for the semi-finals (July 9) even before their last match against Wales.

Led by the massive and destructive Poloso Tuilagi (author of two tries), the Blueberries had done the job by leading 28-0 in the 45th minute. Despite the jump from the New Zealanders, who came back to 14 points, the last word went to Nouchi and his partners, authors, in the end, of five tries.

Sébastien Calvet’s players took the game by the right end in the first period. The New Zealanders were more precise more precise than in the first game against the Welsh. The passes were more fluid and better assured and we felt a collective that began to find each other, little by little. As a reminder, they only played three preparation matches.

After a round of observation, the first try was scored in the 7th minute of play through Théo Atissogbe. Everything happened very quickly: the Blueberries dominated their opponents who seemed confused by the power of the Blueberries, especially on the test of Tuilagi (20th). The latter established their hegemony a little more over the meeting by scoring a third try through Baptiste Jauneau (32nd), the ASM scrum half. New Zealand came close to flattening the ball in the final moments of the half, but it was disallowed by the referee. The half ended with the score 21-0.

A weak time but an instant response in the 2nd half

On returning from the locker room, France had the good idea to score a try thanks, once again, to the second row Tuilagi. Because after that, the Bleuets experienced a crossing of the desert of more than ten minutes. A period during which the New Zealanders regained momentum and pushed the Blueberries to their limits. The latter accumulated penalties and yellow cards (Jauneau, 52nd and Costes, 57th).

The Baby Blacks did not go far from scoring a first try in the 56th but Macca Springer, the scorer, had committed a foul at the start of the action. Finally, the penalty try of the six-time world champions (58th) then the try scored by a Peter Lakai in the legs (58th) served as an electric shock to wake up the XV of France. Two minutes later: Brent Liufau, the Palois, went to flatten the ball in the opposing in-goal. France therefore increased the score to 35 to 14, well helped by a clinical Hugo Reus in the transformation (5/5).

The victory of the France U20 team is historic, against a team of Baby Blacks who did not know which foot to dance on. Les Bleuets therefore have one foot in the playoffs of the U20 World Cup. In the next match, Tuesday, the Blueberries will meet Wales! A meeting which will be followed live with commentary on the Figaro website.
