Manama: The Kuwaiti government has resigned ahead of a no-confidence vote in parliament against the Prime Minister. The official news agency Kuna reported that the government has submitted its resignation letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al Khalid’s Crown Prince Sheikh Meshaal al – Ahmed Al Sabah on Wednesday.

Several opposition MPs had demanded that the Prime Minister be questioned on various issues, including the handling of the Kovid epidemic and corruption. But a resolution passed in March excluded the prime minister from questioning until the end of 2022. Last February, defense and home ministers and members of the ruling family resigned in protest of “arbitrary” questioning of ministers.

The current government took office last December due to a protracted dispute with the elected parliament. In January of that year, a cabinet headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Khalid resigned in a similar situation. Under his leadership, a new cabinet took office in March. But he resigned again in November following a political stalemate.

Sheikh Sabah is a member of the ruling Al Sabah family and has been Prime Minister since the end of 2019. The Kuwaiti parliament has the power to pass laws, to block, to question ministers, and to pass no-confidence motions against senior government officials.

Although the government has taken consolation measures to temporarily improve finances since the Kovid epidemic, more structural reforms, including the debt law, are stalled. Despite the relief of high oil prices, Kuwait has not been able to repay international debt since 2017. Fitch Ratings downgraded Kuwait in January, citing political limitations that prevent it from passing debt legislation and addressing over-reliance on oil, a luxurious welfare system and a fat public sector.
