Libreville, October 10, 2024 – As of Wednesday October 9, 2024, a video has gone viral and is being circulated on social networks in connection with the civic education campaign for the 2024 referendum.
This video shows a member of the National Commission for the Popular Awareness Campaign for Referendum 2024 making statements outside the context of that campaign which have objectives, in light of decree no. 0612/PM/MIS of September 25, 2024 related to the establishment, composition and operation of the National Commission for Public Awareness Campaign for the 2024 Constitutional Referendum as follows:
– establish and launch a civic education campaign program related to the 2024 Referendum, aimed at Gabonese communities living in Gabon or abroad;
– carry out an information, awareness and civic education campaign among citizens using an educational and participatory approach;
– educate people about their rights and duties during election periods;
– encouraging the support and participation of all sections of the population in the Referendum.
Although he regretted the false statements made by this Commissioner, the Minister of Interior and Security announced that he was withdrawing from the campaign commission and that an administrative investigation had begun.
The Ministry of Interior and Security reaffirms its commitment to continue the Civic Education Campaign in accordance with the standards and objectives set.
