London: The government is set to announce a law mandating electric vehicle chargers in newly constructed buildings in the UK. With this, 1,45,000 charging points will be set up across the country. Government sources said the law would come into effect from next year.

The law applies to newly constructed supermarkets, workplaces and renovated buildings. The new law was announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson while speaking at the Confederation of British Industries conference yesterday. The government plans to introduce the new law as part of its goal to ban petrol and diesel cars by 2030.

The government aims to increase the number of charging points in the country from ten to ten by 2030. The project is part of efforts to combat climate change. Leading car makers Jaguar and Volvo have also announced plans to switch to fully electric vehicles.

At the same time, sales of electric cars in the UK are on the rise, according to reports.
