The new composition of the Bundestag will increase and will include 735 deputies against 709 after the elections in 2017, according to the website of the Federal Election Commission of Germany.

In total, seven parties will be represented in the Bundestag. The Social Democrats will receive the largest number of seats – 206 (53 more than in 2017). In second place is the bloc of the Christian Democratic and Christian Social Unions (CDU / CSU) with a result of 151 places (49 less). The Greens won 118 seats (51 more), the Free Democratic Party 92 seats (12 more), Alternative for Germany 83 seats (11 fewer). The Christian Social Union received 45 seats (1 fewer), the Left – 39 seats (30 fewer).

On September 26, the next parliamentary elections were held in Germany. They elected members of the 20th convocation of the Bundestag (Federal Parliament of Germany), who will later elect a new chancellor of the country. This is the first election since 2005 that current Chancellor Angela Merkel will not lead the CDU. The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) won the elections.

The ruling conservative bloc CDU / CSU in Germany nominated Armin Laschet, the current chairman of the CDU, Prime Minister of the most populated federal state of North Rhine – Westphalia, as a candidate for the post of head of state. On August 21, Merkel expressed confidence that this particular politician would become her successor.
