Cuban authorities announced the launch of a pilot test in Havana for the use of the PIN (personal identification number) as an authentication mechanism in face-to-face operations carried out at Point of Sale Terminals (POS).

The news was confirmed by the general director of Red Payment Services SA, Greicher La Nuez Gambino, to the state newspaper Granma, assuring that “we want to go to a higher standard.”

As the directive recalled, at this time when a customer makes a purchase, the clerks’ procedure is to request the identity card as a means of authenticating that they are really the owner of the card.

Now, with the new measure, the user will only have to enter their PIN to complete the purchase process, without any other procedure.

The decision, according to La Nuez, was made “taking into account the conditions of the banking and financial system” and began with the aforementioned pilot test in the La Puntilla shopping center, in Miramar, Playa.

He also stated that this practice, in addition to “being beneficial for the client, represents greater security and agility in operations.”

The test initially only concerns a segment of the cards issued under the Red brand, specifically those that operate in MLC, La Nuez continued.

Once the pilot test is completed, the measure will be extended “gradually and in stages” to the rest of the businesses that operate in Havana and, at a later stage, to the rest of the island.

Finally, the information from the state media clarified that, despite the implementation of this measure, POS terminals that do not require the introduction of the PIN will remain enabled in all businesses, with the aim of not making it impossible for customers to make purchases.
