The long-term future of Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino appears unclear after his team lost the League Cup final to Liverpool 0-1 on Sunday evening.
Pochettino signed a two-year contract with Chelsea last summer, with the option to extend for a third, but there are doubts about whether Chelsea is ready to continue the partnership, according to the Daily Mail newspaper yesterday evening, Monday.
Chelsea disappointed in Sunday’s final, especially since they played against a team full of academy players, as a result of Liverpool suffering from a huge number of injuries.
The newspaper added, “Pochettino now faces a decisive series of matches that are likely to determine his long-term future at Stamford Bridge, with club officials wanting to play in European competitions next season.”
Given the team’s fluctuating results in the English Premier League, the FA Cup may provide Pochettino with his best path at the continental level, by winning the title and qualifying for the European League competition.
The Daily Mail added that Chelsea’s owners have already begun searching for potential candidates to replace Pochettino, at a time when Sporting Lisbon coach Ruben Amorim tops the list of candidates, and his name is among the candidates to succeed Jurgen Klopp in coaching Liverpool next season.
The relationship between coach and fans is likely to be a factor in the owners’ evaluation of Pochettino’s first season.
