Chennai: A new chapter begins in the Chennai team. ‘Thala’ Dhoni handed over the captaincy to Ruduraj. Fans are expecting a change in leadership to bring a boost to the team.
Dhoni was the winning captain of the Chennai team in the IPL series. The 42-year-old is set to retire this season. In a recent news release, he said, ‘New season, new role, wait and see’. Due to this, there were various reports that Dhoni may resign, act as a consultant and become an ‘Impact’ player.
Dhoni stepped down as captain yesterday. Young player Ruduraj Gaekwad, 27, was appointed as the new captain. Ruduraj will be introduced as the captain of the Chennai team at the opening ceremony today. Dhoni will continue as a player.
In the news released by the Chennai team, Dhoni has handed over the captaincy to Ruduraj before the start of the new season. Ruduraj has been part of the Chennai team since 2019. He has played 52 matches so far. Under his leadership, the Chennai team is facing the 17th season.
Chennai team chief Kashi Viswanathan said, “Whatever Dhoni does, it will be for the good of the team. His decision should be respected,” he said.
Second time
IPL started in 2008. Dhoni was the captain of the Chennai team from that day. Dhoni, who resigned suddenly in 2022, handed over the captaincy to Jadeja. When he did not perform well, the captain took over again halfway through the series. Last season (2023), he won his fifth trophy for Chennai.
Now Dhoni has stepped down as the captain of the Chennai team for the second time.

In the Asian Games (2023, China), Ruduraj captained the Indian team and won the gold medal. He played 6 ODIs and 19 T20Is for India. Hailing from Maharashtra, he joined the Chennai team in 2019. In 2020, he participated in only 6 matches and scored 204 runs. In 2021, he scored 635 runs and helped the Chennai team win the trophy. He scored 590 runs in 2023. He has scored 1797 runs in 52 matches for Chennai team.
Leadership change
