Nanguneri Incident: School Education Minister Urges Students to Embrace Everyone and Reject Differences

Chennai: In the wake of the recent Nanguneri incident, School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh addressed the students, urging them to embrace everyone and not feel different. In a video posted on his Twitter page, Mahesh emphasized the importance of inclusivity and unity among students.

Referring to the Vaikam protest that took place 100 years ago, Mahesh encouraged the students to learn from the voice of Father Periyar and participate in the speech and essay competition organized by the government. He highlighted the wisdom imparted by great personalities and the importance of realizing the value of humanity, especially in the difficult times of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Expressing pride in the increasing number of students pursuing higher education in Tamil Nadu, Mahesh acknowledged the jealousy of other states. However, he also shed light on an unfortunate incident that recently occurred. While not delving into the specifics, Mahesh implored the students to sharpen their intellect and focus on their studies, rather than dwelling on divisive incidents.

Asserting the government’s commitment to developing students intellectually, Mahesh made it clear that any form of discrimination or oppression would not be tolerated. He assured the affected student and his family of support and vowed to personally ensure the education and safety of his own siblings.

Addressing the students as their brother, Mahesh encouraged them to be proud of their Tamil Nadu identity and to refrain from actions that create a sense of difference among their peers. He called on them to take responsibility for preventing such incidents from recurring and to become a force that supports the Chief Minister’s initiatives.

The video concluded with a powerful quote from Periyar, stating, “No man is below me and no man is above me.” This underlined the importance of equality and the rejection of caste-based discrimination.

The Nanguneri incident involved a 17-year-old student and his 14-year-old sister who were attacked by a gang. They sustained injuries from a sickle but managed to escape. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from various sections of society, highlighting the urgency to address caste-based violence.

The Minister’s video resonates with the ongoing efforts to promote inclusivity and unity in Tamil Nadu’s educational institutions. The government’s commitment to ensuring a safe and discrimination-free environment for students is critical in fostering a new society that rejects divisions and embraces everyone.
