The Chinese government has given guidelines to eliminate the use of chips from American companies Intel and AMD in the computers and servers of the country’s officials, according to the Financial Times newspaper this Sunday.

These guidelines also seek to leave aside the Windows operating system and foreign-made database software in favor of domestic options, in what would be a new chapter in the intense rivalry between the Chinese giant and the United States, especially in matters technological.

According to the Financial Times, Beijing has asked public bodies above the municipality to include criteria that require “secure and reliable” processors and operating systems when making purchases.

At the end of December, the Chinese Ministry of Industry already issued a statement with three separate lists of CPUs, operating systems and centralized databases considered “safe and reliable” for three years from the date of publication, all of them from Chinese companies. , according to Reuters checks.

The United States wants to increase domestic production of semiconductors and reduce dependence on China and Taiwan. Joe Biden’s government has in fact promoted new legislation to boost American semiconductors, with aid and subsidies for domestic chip production.

Semiconductors have become a strategic industry for the major world economies, also for the European Union, well behind the United States in its production and development. Chips are also a key piece in the thriving artificial intelligence sector, unanimously seen as the technology of the future, applicable to multiple areas of the economy.
