Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine has announced a groundbreaking partnership with the National Health Security Office (NHSO) to provide advanced cancer treatment to patients in need. Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Chanchai Sitthiphan, revealed that the collaboration will allow patients with gold patent health insurance to access expensive proton beam therapy at no cost.

The initiative will see the implementation of a project to provide cancer patients with national health insurance the opportunity to receive treatment with a high-technology proton beam machine. The machine, which is the first of its kind in Thailand and the Southeast Asian region, is housed at Chulalongkorn Hospital and was imported by the Thai Red Cross Society.

Dr. Chanchai noted that the project is set to commence in 2024 and is aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability for the treatment of patients in need of advanced medical technology. Discussions are ongoing with the NHSO to establish a budget for the treatment of patients at participating medical schools, with the aim of providing annual support for patient care.

The collaboration between Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine and the NHSO is expected to streamline access to advanced medical technology for gold patent patients, allowing them to receive expensive treatments at no cost. This will not only benefit the patients but also enable medical schools to contribute their knowledge and resources to help those in need of treatment.

Dr. Chanchai explained, “Proton radiation therapy does not work for all cancers, but it is effective for certain types of cancer and is particularly suitable for treating cancer in children. The machine’s ability to irradiate a specific spot without adjusting the patient’s position makes it a valuable tool for delivering radiation from any angle without causing harm to nearby organs.”

The joint effort by Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine and the NHSO marks a significant step forward in ensuring that cancer patients in need of advanced treatment have access to the healthcare they require. This collaborative initiative is poised to make advanced medical technology more accessible and effective for the benefit of patients in Thailand.]
