The sustained commitment to livestock health in Colombia has been recognized again at the international level, with the recertification granted by the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO). Thanks to the joint efforts of the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) and the dedication of producers of all sizes, the country has consolidated its health status in various key areas.

The WHOA has announced that Colombia has been recertified as:

– Country free of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia.

– Country free of African horse sickness.

– With negligible risk of bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

– Pest of Petits Ruminants (PPR) free country.

– Country free of Rinderpest.

– With two zones free of Classical Swine Fever (CSF).

In the case of foot and mouth disease, it has been highlighted that Colombia has:

– Two free zones without vaccination: Chocó and San Andrés, recertified as such.

– Five free zones with vaccination, consolidating the status of a free country.

This significant milestone is the result of rigorous compliance with established health and regulatory requirements.. Which include exhaustive measures of epidemiological surveillance, analysis, diagnosis and control of diseases. Colombia thus demonstrates its ability to respond effectively and make timely decisions to protect its health status.

Juan Fernando Roa Ortiz, general manager of the ICA, highlighted the importance of this recognition, pointing out that “it consolidates the health status of the country before the world. It allows the development of the Colombian countryside within the framework of the comprehensive rural reform programs that are being implemented and promotes access to new international markets, which benefits not only the economic development of the country, but the livelihood of thousands of rural families that depend on these important productive sectors.

Finally, andl ICA, as a health authority, continues to accompany Colombian producers in compliance with regulations and in the implementation of health measures to strengthen the primary production sector and mitigate risks related to officially controlled diseases.

The recertifications are planned deliveryrlas during the 91st General Session of the WHOA, which will take place in May 2024. In a ceremony that highlights Colombia’s continued commitment to excellence in livestock health worldwide.
