Composition, nutritional value: wine bottles must now be transparent

The wine bottle plays with transparency. From Friday December 8, on the shelves of supermarkets and in wine merchants, the labeling is changing. After two years of discussions, Europe has managed to impose on the wine world new directives “relating to the indication and designation of ingredients for vine products” which will reveal two new pieces of information on the back label : the nutritional value (number of calories, sugar content) and especially the list of ingredients.

The energy value must appear as is, calculated in kilo joules (kj) or kilocalories (kcal) per 100 ml. The presence of allergens (eggs and egg-based products are the most present in wine) must also be included in due form. On the other hand, for the composition of the beverage, there were numerous negotiations with the profession to define what information needed to be delivered and how it should be displayed. If the grape constitutes the main component of the wine, how can we reveal the other ingredients knowing that the space on the back label is already counted with many details such as the alcohol content, the capacity, the organic labels or even information on the estate or property.
