Hedi Slimane’s designs are reliable because they never neglect the human body and, with their subcultural reference system, they always carry the timelessness of youthful rebellion. Who can say anything against a leather jacket or denim vest? The Celine creative director is also covering these classics in his men’s collection for summer 2022.
While Slimane does not question the basic shape of the garments, he undermines it with details: rivet slogans, sequin or safety pin applications as well as contrasting inserts that look like textile inlays on leather jackets, for example. Slimane also combines pink knitted sweaters or cardigans patterned with white dogs, which takes the weight off the black leather and locates the looks in the now – where teenagers pass their time with funny animal videos on TikTok. Or not?

In addition, the legs of Slimane’s jeans widen immensely. Even if this was announced tenderly in the previous collections, it is still a small sensation for the man, his signature piece that is tight skinny jeans. The jeans shape with the very wide straight leg is known from the 90s, it is also known as “Elephant Jeans”. Back then it was mostly worn with platform boots and tight tops. Slimane, on the other hand, now also leaves room for the upper body by generously layering wide shirts and jackets on top of each other. We also see studded collars, fine chains and playful earrings as well as cowboy boots with high heels on the models.

In the video, the outfits flutter in the wind, the accessories sparkle in the sun and the loop of the minimalist tech house track “Up n down” by Izzy Camina pulsates in your ears while motocross bikers perform their stunts on the Celine course. Slimane is a designer who, during the pandemic, found a form of presentation with the video format that can perhaps depict his world more clearly than a physical show. “Cosmic Cruiser” is also a total work of art, which on the one hand shows a successful collection, but on the other hand also gives an up-to-date insight into the creative universe of the shy Slimane, who so rarely appears in front of the camera himself.
