Covid, two hyenas infected: first case in the world

by time news

For the first time even of the hyenas have been infected by Covid-19. It happened at the Denver Zoo where two specimens tested positive. Ngozi, 22, and Kibo, 23, have so far developed mild symptoms: cough, cold and slight sleepiness, reports the Guardian.

The zoo appears confident that the two animals will heal quickly. “Hyenas are notoriously hardy and resilient animals known for their tolerance to anthrax, rabies and distemper“, reads a statement from the zoo, which specifies that the two specimens had no other diseases and should recover soon.

The zookeeper carried out the test on several animals after some lions were found to be ill. In total, in addition to the two hyenas, 11 lions and two tigers were infected. Everyone is healed or on the mend. It is not the first time that animals have become infected in zoos. It has already happened with lions and tigers all over the world. In India, special precautions have been taken to avoid contagion even in nature reserves.
