Auditor’s report Yerami Amir / Premiere presentation

There is one moving image in the show. This happens in the last scene, where the Jews, the heroes of the play, are seen on fire. A chilling and touching image, which corresponds to the massacre on October 7th.

What is it, drama class or Yiddish theater? Photography: Yael Ilan

But apart from this unforgettable image, and perhaps one more image, in which the Poles break into the rehearsal room of the Jews, who are preparing to put on the play “Dreyfus”, the play is old-fashioned, conservative, embarrassing and uninteresting. The show ranges from a drama at the level of a drama class to a play in Yiddish. No offense to the Heidi Theater.

“Dreyfus”, written by Jean-Claude Grimberg and directed by Erez Shafrir, claims to recreate the Dreyfus affair, which agitated the Jewish world between the two world wars. But instead of getting a fascinating story about the Jewish officer in the French army, who was accused of treason and espionage, we get a tedious story and actors who run around the stage without soul and without passion.

What happens to the talented Khan players? Even the humor in the play was lost in the sea of barbarism and exaggerated acting on stage. The only ones who manage to get something out of the characters are Yossi Eini and Aryeh Cherner.

Precisely because of the rising wave of anti-Semitism in the world, the show’s creators had an excellent opportunity to shake up the play and update it. Instead they were stuck in the Jewish town with a story that does not honor Dreyfus and certainly not Judaism. You don’t have to take this direction. You can also criticize the Jews, the heroes of the play, and Judaism, but in a good theater something real must happen on stage. True. Enough for the recitations of the text and the forced movements. I don’t believe you.

“Dreyfus” talks, among other things, about the survival of the Jewish people throughout the generations. I admit that I barely survived the show.
