The Lidl-Trek rider secured victory in a sprint duel against world champion Mathieu van der Poel. It was the Dane’s second triumph in the race. The first came in 2020.

– A deserved victory, really. We must pay tribute to Pedersen today. That was stuff! commented Discovery’s cycling commentator Henrik Evensen.

Early in the race, the main field was split in two due to crosswinds, and it was only Danish William Blume Levy who made it into the leading group of Uno-X riders. However, there was little to say when the two groups gathered again after a few kilometres.

85 kilometers from the finish line, the superstar Van der Poel stepped up and caught up with a group of six other riders, among them Rasmus Tiller.

Tiller and his breakaway mates fell off one by one, until finally it was only Van De Poel and Pedersen who formed a duo at the front. They sat together until they had to decide the victory in a sprint duel.

Earlier on Sunday, it became clear that the Uno-X team’s big star Alexander Kristoff had to sit out the race due to illness. Kristoff won Gent-Wevelgem in 2019 and was the team’s favorite to fight for a top position.
