Maybe we really are. Thirty-five days after the first dose of the vaccine, the risk death per Covid-19 95% cove; the risk of recovery of 90%; to contract the infection dell’80%.

It was December 27, 2020, when the 29-year-old Spallanzani nurse in Rome Claudia Alivernini, received, first in Italy, the first dose of Pfizer-Biontech anti-Covid19 vaccine.

Almost five months later and over 26 million first doses, theHigher Institute of Health publishes with Ministry of Health, and in collaboration with the regional representatives of the integrated Covid-19 surveillance and of the national vaccine registry, the first national study on the impact of Covid-19 vaccination from which the very high efficacy of the preparation emerges already two weeks after the first inoculation, an efficacy that increases up to 80% against the risk of contracting the infection as early as 35 days and before the second dose. The effectiveness of vaccinations and the vaccination campaign are confirmed – says the president of the Higher Institute of Health, Silvio Brusaferro – and the need to quickly reach coverage for the entire population to get out of the emergency thanks to this fundamental tool.

The study collects data from December 27, 2020 (start day of the vaccination campaign in Italy) as of May 3, 2021, out of 13.7 million people vaccinated with the 4 authorized preparations: Pfizer-Biontech (from 27 December 2020); Modern (from 14 January); AstraZeneca (from February 1st); Johnson&Johnson (from 22 April). It is not specified for the efficacy of each single vaccine, as they have been introduced in successive stages and administered to populations with different risk profiles: it is necessary to wait for a longer follow-up time in order to obtain more solid and comparable results.

It is known that 95% of the vaccinees in the study who received the Pfizer or Moderna preparation completed the vaccination cycle within the times indicated by the vaccination schedule. While for the AstraZeneca vaccine none of the people included in the study had yet received the full course, this was due to the expected 10-week interval between the first and second dose. As of May 3, only 1% of those vaccinated had received the single dose of Johnson & Johnson.

The study by the ISS and the Ministry of Health cites other studies on the efficacy of vaccines carried out in Great Britain and in Israel from which it emerged that already starting from the third week from the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine, there is apreventive efficacy against infection.

In the Italian study, the cases of infection, hospitalization and death occurred after the administration of the first dose, within 14 days and from 15 days onwards, were analyzed and it is highlighted that the risk progressively decreases after the first two weeks.

The study takes into account the health workers and RSA guests as more exposed categories and discovers that, for them, the incidence of the risk of contagion, hospitalization and death was much higher than the other priority categories of the Vaccine Plan analyzed (law enforcement, school staff and vulnerable subjects) especially in first days after vaccine administration. He explains the report that, in evaluating the incidence rates of diagnoses per period, it is necessary to take into account the different circulation of the virus in the population and the composition of the vaccinated population.

However, in all categories there is still a reduction in incidence with increasing time from administration of the first dose. And in this way, between the 35th and 42nd day after the first vaccination, an index of the risk of infection, hospitalization and death of 0.20, 0.10 and 0.5, respectively, is reached, without differences between genders and classes. of age, equal to a risk reduction of 80%, 90% and 95% for cases of death.

The delays on over 70. But in Italy, reveals the latest government report, there are over 2 million Italians over seventy who have not yet received the first dose of vaccino: of these, more than half a million are over 80 years old (11.49% of the total of this age group). Sardinia is the region furthest behind with almost one over 80 out of 3 still not vaccinated (30.99%) compared to 1.56% in Veneto. Sicily is also bad, holding the record instead of 70-79 years old still not vaccinated even with the first dose: almost half with 42.57%. The most virtuous, in this age group, is Puglia with 15.70 of those over 70 still not vaccinated.

And yesterday the special commissioner Francesco Paolo Figliuolo, on his Italian tour for the vaccination campaign, he visited the vaccination hubs of Veneto and the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano and took the opportunity to thank all the operators on the front line: doctors and nurses, law enforcement, civil protection and volunteers. If Italy works together and is a team – said Figliuolo -, it will win and get out of this pandemic as soon as possible.

The general then defined the month of May as a month of transition with about 17 million doses available that will allow an average of 450,000 daily doses with peaks of up to half a million. With the ordinance of 9 April – he underlined – there has been a significant increase in the percentages of over 80 and frail vaccinated in all regions together with a sharp and sudden decline in hospitalizations and intensive care and deaths. He confirms the decision to open bookings for the 40-49 age group as soon as possible: The next opening for over 40s – explained Figliuolo – is useful for planning purposes. However, he also warns: The national focus remains on the over 80s, given that there are still many missing from the appeal.
