Former US President Donald Trump has announced that he will run for the presidency again in 2024.
Americans must file documents with the Federal Election Commission to run for president.
Documents confirming Trump’s candidacy were filed with the Commission on Elections minutes before he was scheduled to address his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
A document filed by Donald Trump’s team with the Federal Election Commission designates a primary campaign committee to make contributions and expenditures on his behalf.
He started speaking within minutes of filing the papers for the presidential election.
A voice over the loudspeaker introduced Trump as “the next president of the United States.” Then Trump began to speak.
Trump began his speech by talking about President Biden. “America’s comeback begins now,” he told supporters.
Trump has boasted about what he claims to have accomplished while in office. “In four short years, everyone has done well. All were flourishing like never before,” he said.
“We are now a recessionary nation,” he said when he left office, citing rising inflation.
Even before the pandemic disaster, average annual growth of the economy under Trump was lower than under some recent former presidents.
“Tonight I am announcing my candidacy for President of the United States to make America great and proud again,” he said.
“So from now until Election Day 2024, I will fight like no one has fought before. “We will defeat the radical leftist democrats who are trying to destroy our country from within,” he said during his speech.
Reality Check: Was Trump the Fastest Recovery Ever?
The BBC’s Mike Wendling has asked whether Trump’s claim that his administration has had the fastest economic recovery is true.
Trump said he had presided over the “fastest economic recovery ever recorded.”
The recession was deep in early 2020. The Trump administration put relief in the hands of millions of Americans.
But economic growth didn’t stop when Trump left. In fact it continued until 2021. That’s why Trump’s successor, Joe Biden, is getting the name of rescue.
The pace of the recovery was high due to the nature of the recession caused by the massive work stoppages across the world due to the Covid disaster. That’s not to say Trump’s policies haven’t helped the recovery. But the extraordinary recession certainly picked up again and made progress.
“No plans to join politics”
Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump has issued a statement saying she will not participate in her father’s 2024 campaign.
“I love my father very much,” the statement said, adding, “At this time I have decided to prioritize my young children.” I have chosen the personal life we create as a family.
I am not planning to join politics. I will always love and support my father. “I will do the same from outside the political arena in the days to come,” he said.
During her father’s time in the White House, both Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, served as senior advisers. Kushner, in particular, played an important role in the administration’s policy.
Ivanka was not present when Trump made the presidential announcement in Florida.
Biden did not comment
Reporters who traveled with Joe Biden in Indonesia say Trump had no comment when asked now about the speech.
Asked if there was any reaction to Trump’s announcement, Biden reportedly exchanged a glance with French President Emmanuel Macron and replied, “No, not really.”
Afterwards, the leaders continued their tour of the Hutan Mangrove Forest in Bali.
