Experts of the Eurasian Development Bank drew attention to the growth of wages in Belarus, both nominal and real. In their opinion, this is both a positive moment and a risk for the economy.

According to Belstat, the average salary in Belarus in May amounted to 1,861.1 rubles. This is 65.2 rubles more than a month earlier. Recall that in April the average salary fell by 18.3 rubles.

The EDB notes that May real wages in Belarus increased by 14.2% per annum (a month earlier this figure was at the level of 9.6%.

— This is due both to an increase in wages in nominal terms (18.4% per annum in May after 14.8% in April) and a slowdown in inflation (3.7% per annum in May compared to 4.7% in April ), experts say.

In their opinion, the increase in wages has a positive effect on the dynamics of retail trade turnover, which grew by 5.1% per annum in May (after a decrease of 0.4% in April). That is, Belarusians began to buy more goods.

However, wage growth also carries risks for the economy, according to the EDB. “The expansion of consumer demand will form inflationary pressure in the second half of the year. Our inflation forecast is 7.8% by the end of 2023,” experts expect.
