Data from the Central Electoral Commission of Moldova, after counting 99.46% of the votes, confirmed the positive response of the citizens of Moldova to the constitutional referendum on joining the EU – but by a very small margin.
“European Truth” reported this.
According to the results, 50.41% of the voters gave the answer “yes” to the referendum on introducing the European integration course into the constitution, and the answer “no” – 49.59%. The difference in votes between supporters and opponents was only 12,243.
Now the basic law of Moldova will contain norms regarding its European integration.
At the same time, it is worth noting that the diaspora ensured this positive result. The Moldovans themselves opposed the country’s rapprochement with the EU.
In particular, after counting data from 85% of the polling stations, support for the “yes” answer only exceeded 45%. The result changed in favor of European integrators until data started coming from foreign areas where pro-European populations live.
Even in the capital Chisinau, 44% of the voters, that is, almost half of the residents, opposed the future of Europe. In the most pro-Russian region of Gagauzia, negative responses were 95%.
President of Moldova Maya Sandu she believes that there was no fair political process in the elections and referendum in Moldova. Sandu claims that the authorities have evidence that votes are being bought on a large scale.
The President pointed out that the “unprecedented attack on freedom and democracy” lasted for several months, and that criminal gangs and foreign forces were behind it “who attacked our country with thousands of euros, lies and propaganda.”
The referendum in Moldova was held together with the first round of presidential elections, where Sandu won, but the next president will be decided in the second round.
