A week later, the anger has not subsided for the refereeing body. This Friday, the SAFE (elite football referees’ union) published a press release to review the incidents which marred the Ligue 2 match between SC Bastia and Quevilly-Rouen Métropole, on Saturday December 16.

The game, which ended in a goalless draw, was interrupted in added time, before resuming a few moments later. In question, racist insults allegedly suffered by one of the linesmen. “Turn around, dirty Arab, turn around,” said a man present in the stands according to Olivier Lamarre, the president of SAFE, in comments reported by 20 Minutes.

In its press release, the union deplores the lack of impact on the affair. “Match stopped in Ligue 2 for racist comments towards a referee… and everyone finds that normal! The club concerned, instead of condemning the comments of one of its “pseudo supporters” which it cannot ignore, places the blame on the arbitration decisions” denounces the group in reference to the reaction of SC Bastia.

The Corsican club assured this Thursday that “racism and xenophobia” had “no place at Furiani” while attacking the refereeing body. “Taking refuge behind that (racism) to mask a refereeing performance that everyone will have been able to judge, and that all observers have been able to observe, is not worthy” declares the club, assuring that Sporting only asked to “be arbitrated and judged like the others.

For its part, the LFP disciplinary committee preferred, on Thursday, to put the case under investigation “in view of the seriousness of the facts”. The decision will be rendered on Wednesday January 17, 2024.
