Exceptional softness: records were broken on December 31

by time news

The weather is decidedly particular in this month of December. After the second warmest Christmas ever recorded nationally, France is experiencing a very mild New Year’s Eve this Saturday.

So much so that temperature records for the month of December were even beaten in Lille, with up to 16.1°C recorded at the end of the morning this Saturday, but also in Strasbourg (18.6°C), Rennes ( 18°C) or Caen (17.3°C).

In the southern half of France, the mercury rose locally to 20°C in Bordeaux, Biarritz or Marseille.

Proof that the temperature was particularly high, this Saturday was the third mildest day for a climatological winter (December, January, February), behind December 16, 1989 and December 4, 1953.

Record mildness for a December night

The beginnings of this historic sweetness had already been recorded overnight from Friday to Saturday. As unveiled by meteorologist Guillaume Séchet on Twitter, the national minimum temperature (which averages readings from thirty weather stations spread across the country) was 11.15°C. A record for a month of December since the measurements started.

The extreme mildness of this last day of the year 2022 was accompanied by cloudy weather over a very large part of the territory.

In addition, a southwest wind was expected, with gusts of 70 to 80 km / h on the Atlantic coast and the North-West, and around 50-70 km / h on the North-East. The wind was stronger from Brittany to Hauts-de-France, with peaks at 90-100 km / h on the coast.
