In an announcement on the occasion of the most emotional new year ever, Queen Elizabeth said she misses her husband Philip who passed away this year at the age of 99, the monarchy describing her late husband as a wonderful person. Philip was her husband for 73 years until his death in April at the age of 99.
“Although it is a time of great happiness and joy of life for many, Christmas can be difficult for those who have lost loved ones,” the Queen said. “Especially this year I understand why.”
The Queen did not refer to her granddaughter Harry or his wife Megan, after the couple chose to leave the palace and move to the US, the couple embarrassed the royal family several times in the past year, however the Queen praised her son Charles the Regent, his wife Camilla, and her grandson William and wife Kate during her Christmas message.
The Queen’s Christmas message is a fundamental element of the British Christmas tradition. The tradition began in 1932 when King George V, Queen Victoria’s grandfather, used the radio to greet British citizens.
When the current 26-year-old queen ascended the throne in 1952, she used her first broadcast to thank the people of Britain for their support and asked them to pray for her ahead of her coronation the following year.
