Is there a Playstation 5 Pro coming? Apparently yes, according to new reports. And the performance of the console should even be able to keep up with high-end hardware from the PC sector.

There are always rumors about new console versions from the leading manufacturers Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. The current speculation is that Sony wants to give its Playstation 5 (PS5) – which was launched on November 19, 2020 – a performance update this year. What’s behind it?

Recent leaks from sources like Insider Gaming and YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead shed new light on the highly anticipated Playstation 5 Pro and supposedly reveal a ton of technical specifications.

One of the key revelations concerns the computing power of the Playstation 5 Pro. According to rumors, the Pro version, which will be released at the end of 2024, will have a graphics performance of 33.5 teraflops, a significant increase compared to its predecessor (10.3 teraflops).

45 percent faster than the PS5

In terms of core rendering speed, the Playstation 5 Pro is expected to be around 45 percent faster than its predecessor. This improvement is intended to result in smoother gameplay, better graphics and faster loading times.

To put this into perspective, let’s compare the Playstation 5 Pro’s alleged 33.5 teraflops with some current generation graphics cards. The current NVIDIA Ge Force RTX 3090 (price from around 1,600 euros), for example, offers around 35.6 teraflops of computing power.

While the Playstation 5 Pro would easily fall behind the RTX 3090 in terms of raw teraflops, it’s important to note that consoles can often achieve significant performance optimizations due to their specialized construction.

No confirmation from Sony about the PS5 Pro

The revelation of the leaked documents, which were allegedly uploaded to Sony’s developer portal, is also said to reveal an innovation called Playstation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). Accordingly, PSSR uses the Playstation’s machine learning capability to upscale images, similar to Nvidia’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR.

What is noteworthy in this context is that speculation suggests that this technology could also include upscaling to 8K resolutions in future versions, promising a significant improvement in visual quality. In addition, PSSR is intended to improve the performance of ray tracing on the speculated PS5 Pro hardware.

The allegedly leaked technical specifications of the Playstation 5 Pro promise impressive computing power. However, Sony has neither confirmed nor denied its existence and has not published any official details about the console.
