Santo Domingo Dominican Republic.- The administrator of Banco Agrícola, Fernando Durán, instructed the regional directors and branch managers of this institution on Monday so that, when granting a loan, they give priority to small producers of short-cycle food, chicken and eggs.

The loans would be made at the preferential rates of 6 and 8% and, in some cases, with zero interest.

Durán indicated that the measure ensures that there is an abundance of food and vegetables in the country’s markets, to cause a decrease in food prices.

“The purpose is to increase the production of basic basket items,” said the official during a meeting in which he was accompanied by deputy directors Gloria Furcal, Juan Rosario and Víctor García.

Bagrícola is also interested in strengthening self-consumption agriculture, which abounds among national peasants.

“The idea is that Dominican families continue to have food goods at reasonable prices and in sufficient quantities,” he said.

The measure will also favor producers of small chicken and egg farms.

“From the Government we are working to guarantee food security,” Durán specified, during the meeting in which the regional managers of Bagrícola from the South, East and Northeast regions, Felix Moreta, Carlos Santos and Juan Almánzar, respectively, participated.

In the activity, held at the Bagrícola headquarters, the financing programs were evaluated.

Also participating were the departmental directors of Banco Salomón Rodríguez Santo, Risk Control; Gladys Cristina Méndez Santelises, from Human Resources; Rafael Arturo Romero, Business and Eduardo Báez, Credit.
