Vaalimaa and Niiral crossings will be open, and on the Russian side it is Tarfyanivka and Vertsilya, respectively – one located on the border of Finland with the Leningrad region, the other with Karelia. These points, as noted by the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland Marie Rantanen, will work until January 14, 2024.

At the end of November, Finland announced the closure of all nine checkpoints on the border with Russia due to the migration crisis. Helsinki accused Moscow of provoking citizens of third countries to cross the border. In the event of a resumption of the mass influx of migrants, the border points will be closed again, the Finnish authorities promise.

The opening of border crossings does not mean a change in the conditions for the passage of Russian citizens across the border. Finnish authorities do not allow Russian citizens to enter with a tourist or business Schengen visa, except for special cases listed on the country’s Border Guard website.

Finland is not the first to decide to close the checkpoint on the border with Russia. In October, Latvia completely closed two checkpoints. And now Norway and Estonia are considering the possibility of closing the borders.
