The first time the 12VHPWR connector in the hands of consumers has melted, what will the official think…

Starting with the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, NVIDIA has mandated that all AIC partners need to replace the used PCIe 8 PIN with a new 12VHPWR (12 + 4) connector, and since entering the GeForce RTX 4090 of the Ada Lovelace architecture, consumers have been sceptical. There are doubts about this connection.

Earlier, there was a case of melting of the 12VHPWR connector and the adapter wire abroad.

The player posted a photo of the 12VHPWR connector burnt out on an NVIDIA daughterboard under the US reddit discussion board.

According to the player’s complaint in the discussion forum, the 12VHPWR connector was melted in the middle of the game (Red Dead Redemption 2). Although the graphics card seems to be working, the player has applied for RMA service for the graphics card. ; The model of the graphics card in the accident is GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming OC, and we just have one in our hands for testing, so far no similar problems have occurred.

Judging from the photos, the location where the 12VHPWR connector melted happens to be the hottest location of the entire connector, but the cause of the connector melting has not been determined yet.

Earlier, we used the thermal imaging analyzer to irradiate 12VHPWR under full load, which is about the same location as this meltdown; when the graphics card was fully loaded, the temperature came to 67 and 69 degrees respectively, while the thermal imaging analyzer The video card shown is GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition, and the video card has been running Furmark for at least about 20 minutes, and the TGP is close to 600W.

NVIDIA and GIGABYTE have not officially responded to this case, and for the time being, it can only be classified as a “case”.
