BOLZANO. Alessia Paolini she is very young – born in 1998will accomplish 26 years next May – yet it has already entered the history of the South Tyrolean Army. Yes why Ordinary Marshal Alessia Paolini is the first woman to command a Carabinieri station in our province. To be precise, that of Cornedo all’Isarco. An honor and a burden that Alessia faces with the pride of someone who has Meritoriousness in her DNA. Literally.

Who is Alessia Paolini?

I was born in Bolzano and raised in Castelrotto. My mother is a German-speaking South Tyrolean, my father is of Tuscan origin and I have always spoken both languages. I graduated from the Raetia technical and economic institute in Ortisei, tourism sector. My father is a former policeman and so was my grandfather: in short, it was natural for me to grow up with certain values. The Carabinieri have always been an important part of my life and my education, even before I decided to wear the uniform. My passion has always been jurisprudence and so, when I learned of the public competition for admission to the 8th three-year course of marshal students of the role of Inspectors of the Carabinieri, reserved for girls and boys in possession of thebilingualism certificate, I decided to submit my application. And it went well: after passing the tests and visits, I was admitted to the three-year course in the Marshals and Brigadiers School of Florence, where I obtained a three-year degree in “Security Legal Sciences”. They are three really intense years, where in addition to studying you also have to train.

Then the oath and the return to Alto Adige?

No. During the pandemic, even though we were still students, my course made a contribution to dealing with the emergency. I was assigned to the Pordenone station command, in Friuli Venezia Giulia. They have been truly intense nine months, very fulfilling from a human and professional point of view. After the oath, my first destination was the Chiusa station, where I was deputy commander for two and a half years. I remained there until last November, then I was assigned to the Cornedo all’Isarco station and, on February 12th, I was appointed station commander. It all happened very quickly, I didn’t expect it.

An important and delicate assignment. Also because she is the first woman to hold it

No doubt. But it is a position of great responsibility that I took on with great pride and emotion. I have always known how important it is to establish a direct line with citizens and respond to their requests: a task that I will continue to carry out with dedication. Now, however, as commander, I will have to make decisions and interface with the heads of the provincial command. I will give my best to carry out this task in the best possible way. For some time now, the Army has been very careful to include bilingual soldiers in its personnel ranks here in Alto Adige.

Is it really that important?

It’s very important. It means breaking down what could be linguistic barriers and listening to all people, being even closer to them, becoming a point of reference and guaranteeing even greater safety.
