93-year-old Golam Arif has played a special role in the great mother tongue movement. It was under his leadership that the National Language Movement was organized in Rajshahi in 1952. It was under his leadership that the first Shaheed Minar was built in Rajshahi College. He was awarded the Rashtriya Ekushey Padak in 2019 for his contribution to the language movement.

Golam Arif started his career as a lawyer in 1958. He was elected several times as President of Rajshahi Lawyers Association, Senate and Syndicate member of Rajshahi University and member of Bangladesh Bar Council.
