France has become the first country in the world to make abortion a constitutional right. Parliament has decided to amend the constitution for this purpose. The bill was passed by 780 votes to 72 in the final vote held by the joint session of the two houses of the Parliament. The members received the announcement with loud applause. It will take effect if approved by Congress.
France passed a law decriminalizing abortion in 1975. However, there was nothing in the constitution guaranteeing the right to abortion. It is estimated that 234,000 abortions will be performed in France in 2022 alone. Opinion polls show that 89 percent of French people support the inclusion of the right to abortion in the constitution.
French President Emmanuel Macron said that the decision raises France’s pride to the sky and sends a global message. After the Parliament’s decision was announced, celebrations began under the Eiffel Tower in Paris with the slogan ‘My body is my right’. It is the 25th amendment to the constitution of modern France and the first since 2008.
