France announced on Sunday that it will charter special flights to evacuate its “most vulnerable” citizens from Haiti, plunged into chaos by a wave of violence by criminal gangs.

“The French embassy in Port-au-Prince remains open and continues its activities despite a deterioration in conditions,” the French Foreign Ministry told AFP.

The United States recently began the evacuation of its diplomatic personnel and other American citizens.

Haiti has been shaken for weeks by a wave of violence that began with a coordinated offensive by criminal gangs to free thousands of prisoners in large prisons.

Amid worsening conditions, more than 33,000 people have fled the capital area in the past two weeks, according to the U.N. International Organization for Migration.
