The festival of alternative performing arts ‘The people will not like this’ celebrated this Saturday the third day of this first edition. It has done so with the launch of a bus that has made it possible to see three shows in three cities in Girona in one day. The event started at half past one in the afternoon in Plaça Santa Susanna in Girona with ‘Rue’, a dance proposal by the artist Volmir Cordeiro. He continued with a second stop at the creation space and artists’ residence ‘Animal a l’esquena’ in Celrà (Gironès), to see ‘Orelles’ by Marga Socias & Els Mals Endreços. And it ended in Lloret de Mar (Selva), where the public was able to attend the show ‘Nove spiritualities for atheistic people’ from Cia. impasse

‘The people will not like this’ is an initiative of cultural programmers and independent creative centers from nine municipalities in the Girona counties, who have come together to create a live arts festival. The aim is to bring the public closer to the network of cultural facilities that offer alternative programming. The director of the Municipal Theater of Girona, Elena Carmona, details that “it was born from a need to create a context and an audience for contemporary performing arts.” The festival started on Thursday and will last until Sunday, with a program that has included eight interdisciplinary shows of theatre, dance, visual and audiovisual arts.

The first was Monte Isla’s ‘Donde empieza el bosque aciba el pueblo’, which was performed in Olot on Thursday at eight o’clock in the evening. It was followed on Friday by the ‘Restart Party’ of the BCN Restarters Association + local repairers in Porqueres (Pla de l’Estany) and ‘Inert?’ de Nyamnyam in collaboration with Carme Torrent, Blanca Callén, Manel Quintana and Daniel Moreno Roldán in Banyoles.

Artists and audience share the journey

This Saturday was the turn of the itinerant proposal that united three of the shows scheduled in different cities with a bus available to attendees. The first was ‘Rue’, a dance proposal by the artist Volmir Cordeiro that moves to the sound of Washington Timbo’s drum; it could be seen at half past one in the afternoon in Plaça Santa Susanna in Girona.

The attendees then moved to the creation center ‘Animal a l’esquena’, located at Mas Espolla de Celrà. There, the ticket price included a popular paella lunch and a second show: ‘Orelles’ by Marga Socias & Els Mals Endreços, who have teamed up for the first time to create this “theatrical and sound” show that “reflections about where we put our attention.” “We do unusual theater for one type of audience, but very common for another,” Socias was convinced, at the preview of the show.

The tour ended this evening in Lloret de Mar with the show ‘New spiritualities for atheists’ by Cia. Impasse in the Garden of Peace. The proposal was a reflection on “the evolution of spirituality and rituals within the framework of neoliberal Western societies”. At the end, the participants were able to return to the starting point of the route: in Girona.

The director of the Teatre Municipal de Girona explains that the idea of enabling a bus has been taken forward with the intention that during the journeys it is “to generate conversations between programmers, companies and the public”, an aspect which, she says, “is difficult to go to the theater.” About the title of the festival ‘Això al public no li gratirà’ (with the not crossed out), he says that it “reflects contemporary creation” because the proposals “like it or not, but they always generate questions”.

Regarding the reception of the festival and the influx of the public, Carmona assesses it positively: “we think the reception has been good”. And he explains that various profiles come there with “young people, but also seasonal people who regularly come to the theater to see other shows”.

Programming

The programming ends this sunday with ‘Hablar con las plantas para llégar a un paisaje’ by Artistas Salchichas in la Jonquera (Alt Empordà) and ‘Noche cañón’ by Societat Doctor Alonso in Figueres. Notes for ethics on technological waste’ by Blanca Callén in Girona; on June 2, a ‘conference on contextual practices’ at the Espai nyamnyam in Mieres (Garrotxa) and on June 10, ‘ASTRES: Stellar Mapping’, a show with generative music and lasers based on the stars present in firmament at every moment.
