Chennai Mourns the Loss of Agricultural Scientist MS Swaminathan

Chennai was plunged into grief yesterday as news broke of the passing of renowned agricultural scientist, MS Swaminathan. The 98-year-old scientist died peacefully at his residence in Thenampettai on Thursday at 11.20 pm, succumbing to old age.

Fondly known as the greatest scientist in the field of agriculture, MS Swaminathan left an indelible mark on Indian agriculture with his groundbreaking research and innovations. His pioneering work revolutionized farming methods and paved the way for increased food production in the country.

A recipient of several prestigious awards and accolades including the Padma Vibhushan, the Magsaysay Award, and the World Food Prize, Swaminathan was widely respected for his vision and commitment to empowering farmers and ensuring food security.

The late scientist leaves behind a grieving family, including his three daughters, Soumya, Mathura, and Nitya. As the nation pays tribute to this remarkable scientist, preparations are already underway for his funeral, which will be held tomorrow (Saturday) with state honors.

At present, MS Swaminathan’s mortal remains are kept at his residence in Thenampettai for the public to pay their last respects. Throughout the day, political leaders from various parties as well as members of different organizations have been visiting to express their grief and offer their condolences to the grieving family.

Prominent among the visitors was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K.Stalin, who paid his respects to the departed scientist’s body and laid a floral wreath. He personally condoled with Soumya Swaminathan, one of MS Swaminathan’s daughters, expressing his heartfelt sympathies.

Other eminent figures, including Senior Minister KN Nehru, Muthuswamy, and Saminathan M.S., joined the Chief Minister in paying their respects and offering their condolences to the family.

The nation will forever remember MS Swaminathan as a luminary whose contributions to the field of agriculture were invaluable.
