Table of Contents
A surge in demand for extreme metal is sweeping the Baltic states, highlighted by a sold-out concert from Czech goregrind band Gutalax and an upcoming performance by Norwegian black metal legends Gorgoroth. This weekend, Riga, latvia, is at the epicenter of the action, alongside shows in Tallinn, Estonia, and Vilnius, Lithuania.
Riga is hosting a diverse range of concerts this saturday, October 25, with performances from Ainar Mielava, Enter Shikari, and dropkick Murphys. However, it’s the uniquely provocative Gutalax that has captured the attention – and sold out the “Black Friday” venue mid-week.
Gutalax: The Phenomenal fecal Fury
The Czech group, also categorized as goregrind and even “pornogrind,” has cultivated a devoted following through its deliberately shocking and theatrical performances.Described by concert organizers as “Lords of fecal monsters and just funny people,” Gutalax members perform in bacteriological protective suits, delivering growling vocals and a relentless musical assault centered around the theme of sewage systems and related bodily functions.
The band’s concerts are known for thier interactive – and unconventional – audience participation. Attendees frequently bring toilet brushes and shower the stage with toilet paper, with reports of inflatable toilet cubicles even being launched into the crowd at outdoor festivals. This unique spectacle has proven incredibly popular, with concerts in Tallinn and Riga already sold out.
Gutalax, formed in 2009 in Kremše, Czech Republic, consists of vocalist Martins Matoušek (Maty), guitarist Tomas Anderle (Kojas), bassist Pavel Troup (kebab), and drummer Petrs Svoboda (Mr. Free). Their discography includes the aptly titled albums Shit Beast (2011), Shit Happens (2015), and The Shitpendables (2021). Their performance last year at “Kilkim Žaibus,” the largest heavy music festival in the Baltics, is widely believed to have fueled the current demand for their shows.
Baltic Metal Tour: A Regional Hotspot
The Gutalax tour is bolstered by support from local bands. In Tallinn on October 23rd, “crust punk” group Smertj and another Estonian band will open for the Czech act. On October 24th, Trencheard and Depustūtes will warm up the crowd, while in Riga on October 25th, the iconic Latvian “grain choir” Dehydrated Goat will take the stage. Vilnius, on October 26th, will feature stranguliatorius as the opening act.
For those who missed out on securing tickets to Gutalax, a compelling alternative awaits. On Sunday, October 26th, “Black Friday” will host a formidable lineup of black metal acts.Norwegian legends Gorgoroth will headline, accompanied by French “black/death metal” band Bliss of Flesh, the exotic mexican Shemhamforash, also in the “black/death” genre, and the melodic “deadly” Carved Memories from Costa Rica.
The Baltic region is rapidly establishing itself as a key destination for extreme metal, offering a vibrant and eager audience
