Berlin, Düsseldorf It’s been almost a year since Russian state propaganda managed one of its biggest coups to date in Germany. A short video by Annalena Baerbock shows the German Foreign Minister at a panel discussion in Prague. In it, she assures that the federal government will “stand by the Ukrainians for as long as they need it”. This promise applies “regardless of what my German voters say”.

The video had been edited by propagandists close to the Kremlin in such a way that it seems as if Baerbock were indifferent to the will of the voters and the voters. The manipulated video was distributed via propaganda channels and subsequently shared millions of times. As a result, the Green politician was met with fierce criticism and sheer hatred.

In this country, Baerbock is one of the most common targets of hate campaigns on the Internet – but by no means the only one. Numerous studies show that online hatred is more common among female political leaders than their male counterparts.
