Heavy rain hit the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, and other cities on Wednesday afternoon, leaving people without electricity and generating more than 160 incidents, mostly due to flooding and falling trees. The floods occurred “mainly on roads and in homes”, which meant that soldiers from eleven fire stations in the region and more than 40 vehicles were involved in these incidents.

“Of the 160 incidents, 136 were recorded between 12pm and 4:20pm, due to the heavy rain that occurred during lunchtime,” said Nuno Marques, duty officer at the Lisbon Firefighters Regiment, to the Lusa agency.

According to the TV channel RTP, four cars were damaged after the chimney of a building in Alcântara fell. Firefighters are still at the scene to prevent the structure from collapsing and causing even more damage.

On Monday, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IMPA) warned of the possibility of wind, sometimes strong, in the highlands and on the west coast, with gusts reaching 80 km/h. The forecast pointed to the possibility of hailstorms “accompanied by thunderstorms and strong sea disturbances, with waves from the northwest on the western coast, reaching six to seven meters north of Cape Carvoeiro”, but could, however, reach up to 12 meters.

According to Diário de Notícias, the “bad weather, with rain and very strong wind, caused damage to medium and low voltage lines”. The heavy rains, however, “did not result in any victims or displacement”, José Rodrigues, operations officer at the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC), told the Lusa agency.

Above all, “falling trees, flooding and falling structures” were recorded, for which 957 operatives were committed, supported by 354 ground resources, according to Diário de Notícias.
