Hezbollah Operatives Arrested in Brazil for Alleged Terrorist Activities

The threat of Hezbollah’s global terrorism network extends beyond the Middle East, as evidenced by recent developments in Latin America. According to a report from the French newspaper “Le Figaro”, the Brazilian police have arrested Hezbollah operatives who were attempting to recruit local citizens for terrorist attacks throughout the region.

The arrested activists are accused of being part of a financing network based in Lebanon, through which they funded illegal operations in Latin America, including arms trafficking, drug trafficking, and more. This news comes after the Brazilian police uncovered a cell of Hezbollah operatives last November and arrested three Brazilian citizens who had met with the organization’s operatives in Lebanon. Two individuals were arrested, one was released, and another suspect, who was the main target of the police, managed to escape.

The Brazilian police have stated that the local citizens were unaware of each other and had no prior contact. In their interrogation, the detainees claimed that they did not know they had met with Hezbollah operatives. They described spending a night in a “dilapidated” hotel in Lebanon before being transferred to a luxury building by the sea, where they were asked to hand over their phones and were instructed to kill several people. However, the police spokesperson noted that the detainees have a history of violent crimes and drug trafficking, but there is no evidence of an ideological connection to the organization.

This arrest highlights Hezbollah’s endeavors to expand its global network through “sleeper cells” managed by Unit 910, the organization’s foreign operations unit. The report also underscores concerns raised by Israel and the US since the 1990s regarding potential Hezbollah actions in Brazil and the border region between Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil.

The continued presence and activities of Hezbollah operatives in Latin America pose a significant threat to regional security and stability, reinforcing the need for international cooperation to combat terrorism and dismantle terrorist networks operating on a global scale.
