A shocking incident of feminicide has shocked the country and left the community of La Unión, Valle, in dismay. Diana Carolina Serna, a 38-year-old woman, became the victim of a horrendous act perpetrated by her ex-partner, Hernando de Jesús Suárez. This tragic episode has generated deep indignation and has highlighted the persistent gender violence present in Colombian society.

The fatal event took place last Monday, January 22, in the El Jardín neighborhood, located in the municipality of La Unión, in the department of Valle del Cauca. In records captured by security cameras, you can see the terrifying moment when Diana Carolina walks down a street. Her attacker, Hernando Suárez, chases her with a machete along a block before decapitating her in broad daylight, while several people look on.

Despite Diana Carolina’s desperate attempts to flee, Suárez catches up with her and attacks her until she dies. In a heartbreaking attempt to survive, the victim asked for help from those in the area, but, unfortunately, no passerby intervened to stop the aggressor.

Who is the feminicide?

Hernando de Jesús Suárez, 44, had a history of domestic violence and extortion. Despite his violent and dangerous history, he had previously been released from prison due to his good behavior.

On the same day of the crime, thanks to the rapid police response, the aggressor was arrested. Colonel Giovanni Cristancho, commander of the Valle del Cauca Police Department, declared: “In a police operation, we arrested this person, who had records for family violence and extortion. He will be presented before the competent authorities to answer for the crime.”

The night after the feminicide, the affected community gathered in front of the La Unión Police station to demand justice. This case has generated deep indignation and has highlighted the urgency of implementing more effective measures to prevent and eradicate gender violence in Colombia.
