WASHINGTON– Hollywood’s portrayal of aging significantly impacts how Americans view later life, with 81% believing movies and TV shape perceptions of growing older, according to a new national survey released today. The study also reveals that over half of adults find stories featuring characters age 50 and over to be relatable across generations.
The research underscores the substantial market potential of narratives centered on individuals over 50, as this demographic spends more than $10 billion annually on streaming and movie tickets. It’s a clear signal: stories that authentically reflect the full spectrum of life resonate with audiences and challenge ageist stereotypes.
“Stories shape how we see ourselves and one another,” said Myechia minter-Jordan, CEO. “When movies and television offer rich, authentic portrayals of life after 50,it shifts our perception of aging. Audiences are telling the industry clearly: stories that reflect the full span of life resonate across generations and challenge ageism. That is not only good for society,it is good for business.”
The survey, which included responses from over 2,000 U.S. adults age 18 and over, was unveiled prior to this year’s Movies for Grownups® awards, an annual event recognizing compelling film and television work created for and by the 50-plus audience.
The survey also found:
● 93% of respondents indicated they are likely to watch movies and TV shows with actors age 50-plus in leading roles.
● Approximately one-third (33%) of those surveyed reported that a movie or TV show has positively influenced their outlook on aging.
● More than half (57%) believe that storylines surrounding dating, intimacy, and love insufficiently represent the diverse experiences of older adults, with only 16% of individuals age 65 and over feeling accurately portrayed in romantic narratives.
For over 20 years, the Movies for Grownups program has been a champion of authentic storytelling for and by people 50-plus, actively combating ageism and promoting narratives that reflect the realities of life at every stage.
