Hong Kong: Removal of monuments | Tamil Murasu

HONG KONG: Public memorials at two more universities have been removed following the removal of a monument erected at Hong Kong University two days ago to commemorate the Tiananmen Square massacre.

Called the ‘Pillar of Shame’, the statue was a key symbol of the vast independence promised to Hong Kong, which was ceded to China in 1997.

The bronze statue of the ‘Democratic Goddess’, which has now been removed, is 6.4 meters high.

The statue is modeled on a statue erected by students in Tiananmen Square during the 1989 protests.

Hong Kong universities say the monuments are ‘unauthorized’ or pose ‘legal and security hazards’.
