National holiday of October 23rd

“Hungarian is the language of freedom,” said Katalin Novák on Sunday in Australia. The President took part in a commemoration ceremony by Hungarians abroad for the revolution and freedom struggle of 1956 in Melbourne.

“October 23 is the biggest holiday for the Hungarian diaspora worldwide, because there is much to honor and mourn on this day,” emphasized Novák. “We celebrate our Hungarianness, the love of freedom and the natural cohesion of the Hungarian nation across all borders. At the same time, we mourn all those who gave their lives and blood for our freedom, we mourn the torn families and forced emigration.” This national holiday unites the Hungarians of the motherland with the Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin and the Hungarians through a common language and history Diaspora. Novák reminded us that freedom has to be fought for every day.

Citizenship and the right to vote

As president, her constitutional mandate is to deal with all Hungarians in the world. During her five-year term, Novák said she would visit all major Hungarian communities scattered around the world. In Australia, her first route led to the Hungarians living there, to a retirement home whose residents are all Hungarians.

These people told her about personal experiences in October 1956. The 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne became a drama for the Hungarian delegation instead of sporting successes. Novák was convinced that the events of that year provide the moral fortress on which all decisions in the here and now can be based.

“It is no coincidence that we have also reunified the nation in a legal sense by granting our Hungarian compatriots citizenship and the right to vote outside the borders,” explained the President. With this, Budapest wanted to convey the message to all directions that all Hungarians are equal, “no matter where they end up.”

“We Hungarians wish peace”

Regarding the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, Novák noted that Hungary condemns the aggression of Russia and Hamas and is making every effort to prevent any escalation of the conflicts. “We stand with the innocent victims and advocate for peace. We Hungarians wish for peace because we want to preserve our hard-won peaceful life.”

“Those who truly understand and understand the Hungarian language will never submit to oppressors and dictators.”
