A call to order for the rebels. The Immigration law must be “applied with strict respect for republican institutions,” said Thursday the president of Departments of France, François Sauvadet (UDI), in a statement sent to the press. He thus addresses the 32 left-wing departments which threaten not to respect certain provisions of the text.

As soon as the Immigration law was passed, these territories announced on Wednesday their refusal to apply a measure that has become emblematic: the restriction of access to the personalized autonomy allowance (APA). This social assistance, paid to people aged over 60 in a dependent situation, must in fact be subject to a five-year waiting period for foreigners – reduced to two and a half years for those who have worked.

“Applied with strict respect for republican institutions”

This turn of the screw will, however, have to be validated by the Constitutional Council, seized by the executive and the left opposition. However, this authority “has not yet rendered its decision” and consequently “we cannot know, at this time, the content of the Immigration law which will be promulgated”, underlined François Sauvadet.

Whatever the verdict, the president of the Côte-d’Or department, at the head of an association of predominantly right-wing Departments of France, does not intend to deviate from the rule. “My commitment is firm: once the law is in force, it will be applied with strict respect for republican institutions,” he warned. “As department president I will apply the law,” he also wrote on X (formerly twitter).

A warning which echoes that of the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, who recalled Thursday on CNews and Europe 1 that “the law imposes itself on everyone, especially when you are elected by the French people”.
