Earlier, India chased Australia’s first innings score of 263 runs and were bowled out for 262. Nathan Lyon took five wickets and broke the Indian batting line. Axar Patel was India’s top scorer with 74 runs.
India started the second day on 21 runs without losing a wicket and fell to Nathan Lyon’s spin net. With the score at 46, KL Rahul was trapped in front of the Lion wicket. Rahul managed to score only 17 runs. Rahul, who continues to be in poor form, is unlikely to get a chance in the next game.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma was the lion’s next victim. Lion broke Rohit’s defense and gave the Aussies their second wicket. Rohit’s score was 32 runs. After Kohli, the Lion completed his five-wicket haul by dismissing wicketkeeper Srikar Bharat. Lion also became the third player to complete 100 Test wickets against India. Axar Patel and Ravi Ashwin saved the day for India, who fell to 139-7.
The defense of both of them was to test the patience of the Australian bowlers. The Indian innings has built up momentum. Ashwin was swinging the bat with care as Axar pounced, finding boundaries with ease. Both added 118 runs for the eighth wicket.
Axar meanwhile scored his second half-century of the series. Cummins returned Ashwin on the second ball after selecting the new ball. Renshaw’s brilliant catch was behind Ashwin’s dismissal of 31 (71).
Ashwin got out just 10 runs short of the Australian score. Soon India lost Aksar too. Cummins’ incredible catch on Murphy’s ball led to the star’s dismissal. Axar scored 74 runs off 115 balls with nine fours and three sixes.
Renshaw bowled Mohammad Shami and set the stage for the Indian innings. Apart from Lion, Cummins and Kuhneman took two wickets each.
