The five-match Test series has been played so far only by elite cricketing nations. England-Australia are regular names in this list. However, Australia did not compete in the five-match Test series with India in the last three decades. Finally, after 33 years, the two teams are entering the field in a five-match Test series. This has been confirmed by Cricket Australia (CA).

Today, Monday (March 25), Cricket Australia said in a press release that the two teams will play 5 Tests in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the 2024-25 season. The statement quoted Board of Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jai Shah as saying, “This is our collective commitment to nurture and improve the significance of Test cricket.”

Meanwhile, Cricket Australia Chairman Mike Baird indicated that the number of Tests will be increased in the series between the two teams. He said, ‘We are delighted to announce the expansion of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This series will make the rivalry and thrill of two cricketing countries more interesting.’

The white dress battle between Australia and India is not new. These two teams have been playing Tests regularly since the 19th decade. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is well known. However, the last time the two teams met in a five-match series was in the 1991-92 season. Australia won the five-Test series 4-0 at the service.

Since then, the two teams have faced each other several times in the last three decades. A further 15 multiple-match series were played on a home-and-away basis, but none of these were five-match series. 12 out of 15 Tests were 4 Tests. India have won five of the last seven series. However, Australia won the final of the Test Championship.
