Title: Alkompis Faces Accusations of Spreading Anti-Semitic Sentiments

Date: [Date]

In a recent controversy surrounding Alkompis, Sweden’s largest Arabic-language news site, allegations of disseminating anti-Jewish sentiments have emerged. Willy Silberstein, a board member of the Swedish Committee against Antisemitism (SKMA), expressed concern about the anti-Semitic statements made during a conversation on the platform.

Alkompis boasts a significant following of over 2.5 million Facebook users and covers news, current affairs programs, and community journalism. However, one of the site’s presenters ignited controversy when a post on his private Facebook page suggested that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s Jewish heritage was only just realized. Another commenter contributed to the conversation by stating that Jews are the most influential people globally and consequently exercise control over Western governments with the support of the United States. The presenter even responded with a resounding agreement.

Willy Silberstein, from SKMA, condemned these remarks, pointing out their connection to an age-old anti-Semitic trope that Jews conspire to control the world and are supported by the United States. Silberstein also questioned the relevance of Mark Zuckerberg’s religious background, emphasizing the need to refrain from such anti-Semitic rhetoric.

The controversy did not stop there. Another presenter on Alkompis wrote a Facebook post just hours after the recent Hamas attack on Israel, stating, “Our guys are fine.” The presenter further engaged with a comment expressing hopes for victory by interacting with a heart emoji. Additionally, the presenter changed their cover image to depict Palestinians overpowering an Israeli military vehicle.

Silberstein, again expressing concern, noted that these statements were deeply troubling, especially considering the recent spike in violence against Jews. He decried the insensitivity exhibited in these posts and emphasized the need for responsible journalism.

Amidst the uproar, Julia Agha, the CEO at Alkompis, chose not to participate in an interview but instead issued a written statement. In her statement, Agha claimed that Alkompis is an independent media organization without any political bias. She asserted that they do not tolerate anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, homophobia, or any other undemocratic views within their journalism or among their employees. Agha expressed regret over the casualties in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and criticized Sveriges Radio for speculating that Alkompis supported acts of terror in Israel on October 7. According to her, these allegations lacked any factual basis.

Following inquiries from Ekot, both presenters have since removed the controversial posts from their private Facebook pages.

The incident has sparked debate about the responsibility of media outlets in preventing the spread of hate speech and maintaining unbiased reporting. As the Swedish Committee against Antisemitism continues to monitor the situation closely, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of promoting tolerance and respect in journalism.
