Prithviraj Sukumaran has been working in South films for more than two decades, but after ‘Aurangzeb’, ‘Naam Shabana’ and ‘Aiya’, the strong role of ‘Salaar’ established him as a Pan India star. Is done. These days he is once again in the news with his film ‘The Goat Life’ based on a true incident. Recently, while talking to ‘Navbharat Times’, he also talked about his career, challenges and his daughter. He also opened his heart about that sad time when his father’s shadow was removed from his mind. A special conversation with him.

Talking about your recent film Salaar, how much did it help you in establishing yourself as a pan India star?

-I don’t know how much benefit I got, but yes, now people have started taking more selfies with me at Hyderabad Airport. It seems that I have become more popular than before. (smiles) Who is Vardharaj Mannar, the enemy of ‘Salar’? He has become a villain on screen, but Prithviraj Sukumaran is no less than a hero.

After the release of films in Hindi along with South languages, artists like you have got the status of Pan India Star. Now it is preferred to be called Indian Film Industry instead of Bollywood or South Cinema?

-I think this is a very natural evolution of cinema, industry and business. This had to happen. Today, when people have access to cinema in other languages of the country, their reach has increased. Today anyone can sit anywhere and watch movies in Malayalam, Bhojpuri or any other language. There is a confluence of all languages in cinema. Viewers have started watching content in other languages apart from their own language. We are already the biggest film industry in the world and if we come together and make films with the same coordination, it will be amazing.

Which directors are you willing to work with in Bollywood?

-I want to work with all directors. I want to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali sir. Ram Gopal Varma sir’s cinema has impressed me a lot. He alone has left his mark in Indian cinema. I have a lot of respect for him. I am also a big fan of Ali Abbas Zafar and recently I got a chance to work with him in ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan 2’. I have become familiar with Bollywood through Karan Johar’s films, so I am keen to work with Karan Johar also.

Are the audiences seeing you as a surprise package in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan 2?

-I am playing a negative character in the film. But I would like to say that this is not limited to just the role of villain. To be honest, no one offers me the role of a villain and when I got the offer of this role, I too was surprised, but this character is such that any actor would enjoy doing it. I had a lot of fun. I enjoyed working with Ali, Akshay sir (Akshay Kumar), Tiger (Shroff), Manushi, Sonakshi and Alaya. This team proved to be great to work with.

What do you consider your gray side?

-I have anger management issues. I wouldn’t say that I have conquered my anger over the years, but yes, I have now learned to use it constructively.

He is also the father of ten-year-old daughter Alankrita. How has having a daughter shaped you as a person?

– I have improved as a person after the arrival of my daughter. The feeling of being the father of a daughter is amazing. It’s such a great feeling to see him grow up and develop as a person. My daughter is everything to me.

After watching ‘Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan’ teaser, people divided into 3 groups on Twitter, Shahrukh fans jumped between Akshay and Prithviraj

How do you handle social media?

-I have said before that if I am given a choice, I would not like to be on social media. But for us actors, producers and directors, social media is the cheapest medium of publicity. This is a medium where you can easily and amazingly connect with your audience and fans. An Instagram post is more powerful than a Rs 2.5 crore advertisement on the front page of a newspaper, because today mobile is in everyone’s hand. But in social media, you need to remember that you should use it to your advantage, they should be instrumental in your life, you should understand that the real world is not what is on social media. Real is what you are living. My generation has at least seen the era which was without social media. We have also seen the arrival of this monster of social media and its evolution. Can we still understand where to draw the line? But it is very difficult for children born in the era of social media.

What was that moment in your life when everything changed and you felt that there was a difference?

-I was just 14 years old when I lost my father. And when he passed, no one was sick or in any trouble. Actually he suffered a cardiac attack and passed away suddenly. That was a life-changing moment for me. Today I feel very sad that my father is not alive to see the little success I have achieved. If he were alive, he would definitely be proud of me.

Fans were seen standing in queues like a temple for Salaar, video from outside the theater surfaced

Talking about your latest film The Goat Life, there is a lot of discussion about your look and your expressions in it.

– People may be talking about the look, but the look in it is secondary. The important aspect of the story is what difficult things this character goes through. This film is based on a true incident and amazingly, the person on whom it is based is alive and safe. Today he is in a position to share that experience of his life with us. This is the story of a man who was stuck in the desert for three years. He has gone through a lot and his three years of survival has been depicted in three different faces. The first phase is when he reaches the desert and realizes that he is trapped in the Sahara. In the second phase, due to staying in the desert day and night, he has lost weight, he has become black and then in the third phase, you see him after three years and his appearance has completely changed. He is animal-like, so his looks are a reflection of the experiences he has gone through. The proposal for this film came to me from director Blessy. Blessy is a great filmmaker of Malayalam cinema. Every Malayalam star is keen to work with Blessy. Blessy had been dreaming of making this film for the last sixteen years and when he finally made this film, he cast me.
