Italy’s right-wing populist Meloni holds ship blockade against…

“Why has the EU never tried to negotiate with Libya to agree on a departure stop?” asks the head of Fratelli d’Italia, who is hoping for a victory in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Italian right-wing populist Giorgia Melons, leader of the post-fascist party Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy/FdI), sees a ship blockade off North Africa as a way to halt migrant arrivals in her native Italy. “The best solution to the problem of migration is to block departures,” he said Melons in an interview with the Italian radio station 102-5.

“Many claim that a naval blockade cannot be implemented because it is similar to an act of war. Why has the EU never tried to negotiate with Libya to agree on a stop-departure?” asked Melons. She spoke in favor of setting up hotspots in Africa to assess who has the right to immigrate to Europe as a refugee. “You can negotiate with the Libyan authorities,” said the 45-year-old Roman.

Fratelli d’Italia speculate with election victory

Melons is the strongest single party in the centre-right bloc according to polls. If the centre-right coalition wins the September 25 general election and its group is the strongest single party, it is entitled to the prime minister’s post. “The rules are well known in the centre-right camp. The party that gets the most votes in the coalition proposes the name of the prime minister. That name will be me if Fratelli d’Italia emerges from the elections as the strongest single party,” so Melons.

The centre-right camp of Melonis FdI, ex-Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia and ex-Interior Minister Matteo Salvini’s Lega are the favorites in Italy’s September 25 general election. According to polls, the Fratelli d’Italia could get 23 percent of the vote.
