The brutality of the ramps of its port and logistical complications have put the final time trial of the Giro d’Italia 2023 in the lion’s den. Among the detractors of the exercise is Patrick Lefevere, who describes it as a complete “farce”.

This was made known in his weekly column at Het Nieuwsblad, where he was critical of the conditions of the ascent to Monte Lussari. “Today a time trial decides the Giro, although it can also be called a circus. I am not going to weigh my words: how the route is now drawn, I am three hundred percent against it, ”said the Quick-Step boss.

“I don’t understand the fascination with those extreme percentages of incline. This Giro has been a test: the steeper the mountain, the more often a mouse gives birth ”, she mentioned, referring to the theory that the steeper a pass is not proportional to more spectacle.

“Ilan Van Wilder will run with a 36×34 ratio. That’s mountain biking, not road biking. I think we should monitor the limits of the various disciplines more strictly,” he added.

In turn, he exposed the hypocrisy of the CPA – the cyclists’ union – and the riders themselves for not seeking changes on this day as they did on others. “In the Crans Montana stage, the peloton wanted a shortened stage and they got it. But then I don’t understand why they let today’s time trial go by, ”he questioned.

All this without letting go of the logistical adjustments due to the narrowness of the promotion, where the organization had to divide the riders into three separate batches in 90 minutes and assign motorcycles to the neutral mechanical service given the impossibility of using cars.

“And then in the last ten decisive kilometers there is a mechanic on a motorcycle behind, with a bicycle on his shoulder. Are those the professional standards you want to propagate as a cycling sport? I think it is a farce ”, he sentenced.
